Italian brand Gucci never fails to raise eyebrows with their whimsical, granny chic designs that blur gender boundaries. However, the brand has recently drawn mixed reactions—and a lot of disapproval—from one item that’s been placed on the hot seat: stained overalls. Yup, you read that right! Called the "Eco Wash Organic Denim Overall," the piece is part of Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2020 menswear collection. The designs are characterized by a grunge vibe, punctuated by many colorful, warm-fuzzy pieces, like sweaters and babydoll dresses.

According to the official description, the stained overalls were designed in a bid to “explore” and “reinterpret” classic denim fabric through different washing techniques that straddle the line between “vintage and contemporary.”
The overalls were crafted with organic cotton and was manufactured in a way that doesn’t involve harmful chemicals, pesticides, or artificial fertilizers—part of Gucci’s sustainable efforts. Aside from that, the description also states that all leftovers from the design’s cutting process would go to the brand’s upcycling campaign, Gucci Up.
Perhaps it was this eco-friendly and sustainable dimension that partly inspired the brand to go for worn-out, grass-stained overalls, but the internet is clearly unhappy—especially upon seeing that each piece retails for $1400, or approximately P68,005.
Netizens quickly pointed out the fact that they could make their own stained overalls and call it high fashion. One Twitter user said that she has a stained pair (with paint for an extra bonus) and could sell them for $500. Others couldn’t get over the fact that stains could be stylish, even dubbing the hashtag #grassstainchic. Apparently, it doesn’t take much to be a Gucci designer, netizens feel.
People couldn’t fathom how expensive the overalls are when you could grab your own and “roll around” on grass to achieve the same effect. “I’ll give you the real thing for $10,” one Twitter user joked.
But kidding aside, other netizens couldn’t help but express how problematic the design is. Many have pointed out that it’s “rural cultural appropriation” and that the design is “offensive,” given the fact that farmers wear the exact same clothing. On the other hand, some people were just shaking their heads in disapproval of the “rich urban fashionistas.”
In the same vein, netizens couldn’t help but ask what real farmers would think after hearing that Gucci sells stained overalls. One even went so far as to imagine farmers selling their own “authentic” overalls for twice the price of Gucci’s.
This isn’t the first time that Gucci released “pre-stained” wardrobe pieces. Last year, the brand made headlines (again) for dirty sneakers that give off a worn-in look. Dubbed the Screener Sneakers, each pair retails for $870, approximately P42,238.50. The design was inspired by classic trainers from the ‘70s. They look like they’ve been well loved for years.
Despite the mixed reactions elicited by Gucci’s controversial design, it’s safe to say that we can add this to our growing list of weird things that happened in 2020. We doubt it’s the last time Gucci will turn heads, either. What’s next?
