Gucci Shuts Down NYC's Times Square for Demna's First Cruise Show

This is not your average Cruise show.

New York is one of the world’s most electric cities. Home to a vibrant art scene and a melting pot of cultures, the metropolis offers an endless stream of personalities and perspectives at every corner.

That same philosophy guided Demna’s first Cruise collection for Gucci. Presented right in the middle of Times Square, the 63-look lineup subverts the resort-ready codes typically associated with Cruise presentations. In their place, Demna introduces what the house calls its “new core wardrobe”—hence the title “GucciCore.”

“It is a stylistic cross-section of New York City, from Madison Avenue to Brooklyn, SoHo to Harlem, and Fifth Avenue, worn by the kinds of people one might pass on the street. A plurality of styles that intersect like the streets of the city,” the Florentine house noted.

Demna alludes to Gucci’s longstanding relationship with New York, a connection that stretches back more than seven decades. In a manifesto, the Georgian designer describes the collection as a “homecoming” of sorts:

Now, with his fourth collection for the house, Demna sharpens his interpretation of Gucci through a wardrobe that threads together elements from his earlier presentations: La Famiglia, Generation Gucci, and Primavera. “This time, the idea was to build a core wardrobe of staple pieces that form the foundation of the House’s stylistic language,” he says of the collection.

Accordingly, several signatures from previous seasons return in updated forms. There is a short-coat adaptation of the red Incazzata look from the La Famiglia collection, alongside the reappearance of icy, mink outerwear and the body-contouring suits that have become recurring fixtures in Demna’s work for the label, among others.

Ultimately, Demna positions the presentation as the starting point of a proposed “permanent collection” designed to evolve gradually over time. More than capturing the multiplicity of New York's style identities, the lineup also paints a picture of what's to come for Demna’s Gucci: one that, in his words, is “grounded in pragmatic, wearable pieces that are unmistakably Gucci.”
