Designer Gian Romano does things big. From his hair (which has recently taken its latest incarnation in a frizzy 'do that gives him a modern-day-caveman-in-Rick-Owens look), his personality (he can be quite the rake, so partying with him entails a great deal of wild fun), and his designs (carefully tailored and manipulated pieces that toy largely with form and function)—Gian is never one to slink away from the spotlight. So it comes as no surprise that he chose to launch his latest collection, C Major in Drop D, not in Manila, but in a different city entirely—and with a different country code, at that.
Singapore, home to Blackmarket, the clothing store owned by Jasmine Tuan and Filipino retailer Quincy Teofisto, saw the launch of C Major in Drop D a fortnight ago. The second branch of Blackmarket in Orchard Central housed the collection's wooden installation—built by Gian himself with the help of his friend, photographer Raena Abella—in which Gian's newest garments hung from suspended S-hooks amidst a decidedly abattoir-like atmosphere.
Cotton tank dresses with cutouts sides and zippered men's jackets beckoned to the partygoers from their chains, while leather harnesses hung in buttery darkness from the wooden walls of the makeshift facility. Models didn't walk; instead, clients walked to the garments, and sized them up. (Click here to know all about the collection.) The leather harnesses were particularly attractive to the Singaporean clientele that showed up that night, who have developed a cult following since Gian was first stocked in the Lion City.
An after-party was held in Velvet Underground in Zouk, where the designer, his friends, and guests celebrated the collection's arrival with yet more booze and '90s R&B and hip-hop beats. The launch drew itself out til the wee hours of the morning and in the succeeding days after when word spilled about the fresh merchandise—attesting that Gian Romano's cachet stretches not just all day and all night, but to and from different countries, too.
C Major in Drop D is available in Blackmarket No. 2, #02-10 Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Road, Singapore. In Manila, the pieces are available to-order from Gian Romano.
