After millennial pink's strong reign during the past year—from runway trends and beauty brands to dozens and dozens of Instagram feeds—a new “it” color is now on the move to oust it from its throne. Everyone, say hello to Gen Z yellow!
According to Elle Australia, Gen Z yellow is a “bright, bubbly, flirtatious yellow” that represents the new generation. However, it’s not just limited to one particular shade. Man Repeller notes that it ranges “from buttercream to melted butter and beyond.” (Think Selena Gomez’s Fetish music video, in which the singer wore several frocks in varied hues of yellow punctuated by a lemon-tinted film effect.)
Just like how millennial pink wasn’t simply a color but also a representation of a generation that upholds a strong sense of feminism, Gen Z yellow is not just another fad. Rather, it’s an embodiment of a new age that thrives in its quirks, embraces its flaws, and sees being different in a positive light.
If you need more proof of this color being the next big thing, you can take it from the global fashion scene. As if on cue, designers have been rolling out a flurry of Gen Z yellow pieces for both their lookbook campaigns and runway looks—the likes of Valentino, Kenzo, Versace, and Calvin Klein seem to have gotten the memo.
Another point to prove our case: Millie Bobby Brown a.k.a. the quintessential cool girl of the new generation. The 13-year-old Stranger Things star was seen rocking orange’s better-looking cousin during a rare moment of downtime with her gal pals…
and on the red carpet (or, well, blue) at last year’s Teen Choice Awards.
Look—she even seems to like it as an Instagram filter!
Still not convinced? Cool girls everywhere are in on the Gen Z yellow trend, too! See below for more style inspo:
Take cues from Kaia Gerber and opt for a romantic off-shoulder top in mellow lemon.
Kendall Jenner is certainly not one to get left behind. Our bikini shopping for summer officially begins today!
Truth be told, you need not look further—Manila's It girl Martine Cajucom has also served her fair share of Gen Z yellow hotness.
She even went matchy-matchy with Bea Soriano-Dee! Now that's how you do #twinning.
Or, if you're feeling bolder than usual, how about a beauty look like Zendaya's? She looks smokin'!
