Lady Gaga released the cover art for her newest single “Marry the Night” on Monday night in the U.S., October 17, that’s Tuesday morning for us here in the Philippines. As much as it was a treat for fans to see it ahead of time, it’s a bigger treat for Filipino fans to know that she’s wearing a rubber top designed by Kermit Tesoro and sculptor Leeroy New.
We first saw this design at his Holiday 2010 show for Philippine Fashion Week Week where the designer and sculptor collaborated in a momentous collection.. It’s no secret that the team of the singer’s fashion director, Nicola Formichetti, has contacted Kermit in the past to commission clothes for her. (Read more about it here >>)
Before she released the photo, Lady Gaga tweeted, “Do you want the #MARRY THE NIGHT SINGLE COVER tonight?” adding “If monsters make MARRY THE NIGHT SINGLE COVER the number one trending topic I will release it tonight. Early. SORRY INTERSCOPE! I LOVE THEM!”
She later posted the image of her in that Kermit x Leeroy top and shorts, lounging atop a car, another car on fire in the background on Twitter with the note, “New York is Not Just a Tan that You’ll Never Lose.” As of press time, 263,020 of her fans have already seen the photo with over a thousand admiring comments.
Nicola Formichetti, in his blog, credited both Kermit Tesoro and Leeroy New, in collaboration with in-house designers, for Lady Gaga's rubber "armor" on the cover art of her new single. Her python thigh-high boots were by Christian Louboutin.
Kermit tells us a bit about the experience of designing something for Mother Monster.
How does it feel to have Lady Gaga wear your creation?
I'm definitely grateful that an extension of our hard work has finally touched down! I'm very happy [with] how it turned out because the effort plus the anticipation are always apparent per project. This time, the cosmos was too kind.
What's the story behind the design you made for her?
First, they contacted me to make something very simple. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say it. Let's just wait ‘til the video comes out.)
[I] sent them illustrations and we decided to modify a particular item that was supposed [to have been] part of the “You and I” video. Later, it became the object outfit for the MTV video premiere.
It [can be seen as] a collaborative effort since I was briefed on exactly what she wanted. With the help of her team they injected [into the design] Gaga and Nicola's vision for “Marry the Night.” The resulting styling was very clever; I was even surprised with how it was beautifully transmogrified.
If you take a closer look, the item used was basically the rubber suit from PFW Holiday 2010.
