Five-toed shoes have caused much discourse in recent years—particularly in the “ugly” shoe arena. In 2025, South Korean celebrities like Jennie Kim, Shin Min Ah, and Sojin were spotted wearing the aforementioned footwear. And while they are typically praised for their sartorial choices, these particular pairs raised a few eyebrows.
Vibram, known for its high-performance rubber soles built for the outdoors, popularized the design through its FiveFingers shoes, born from “the desire to rediscover contact with our natural environment, returning to the essence of the human foot becoming one with our surroundings.” As the brand’s website describes, the footwear is designed to facilitate a closer connection between the human body and the natural environment.
Regardless of how you feel about the style, five-toed footwear makes an effortless fashion statement. But beyond its polarizing appearance, what does it actually feel like to wear? To satisfy our curiosity, Preview asks stylish individuals who have tried the shoes themselves.
Would You Wear Five-Toed Shoes?
Tonette, Psychometrician and Yoga Instructor
“At first, you’ll have a hard time tucking each toe in their respective ‘cribs,’ but once you get the hang of it, it’s like wearing a normal closed shoe! It has an adjustable strap in the ankle area, which makes it very comfortable to wear. Sometimes, I’m afraid it will get worn out since it’s leather, but so far, nothing has changed with the quality. Honestly, it feels like I'm wearing nothing. I feel the floor, the ground. I feel most connected to where I walk when I use them.”
“I wear my FiveFingers anywhere! If I have to suggest the best place to wear yours, probably when strolling around the city or during yoga classes. It works well for me ‘cause of its grip on my feet and toes.”
Argie Alcantara, Software Engineer
“It simply feels like you're barefoot. Like you're ‘one with the ground.’ I really enjoy using it during my gym sessions—I feel the proper activation of my feet, especially during squats, RDLs (Romanian Deadlifts), and the like.”
Felicia Cui, Multidisciplinary Designer
“It’s honestly like being barefoot, which I already love doing around the house, but you get to take that feeling outdoors. I love the grip and how versatile they are—they dry quickly, are easy to clean, and so easy to bring around. I love my closed shoes too, but on so many days, I still find myself reaching for my FiveFingers. They’re just the best.
“I wear them for gym workouts, daily walks, errands, and honestly, just about anywhere. I love wearing them after being in closed shoes all day because my feet can finally breathe and move.”
Jennah Leigh, Model and Content Creator
“For me, they’re really comfortable! It doesn’t feel overly ‘barefoot.’ Personally, I love going barefoot anyway, so it basically feels like my feet but better. There’s so much grip, and the shoes hug your feet in a really nice way without feeling restrictive. Once you get used to the five toes, it actually feels super natural!
“Honestly, you can pretty much do anything in these! I wear them to the gym, yoga, pilates, shopping, and even on dates. The only thing I'd say is they’re not really made for running or walking on super rocky floors. Other than that, they’re my go-to shoes.”
Czarina Toledo, Brand Owner and Fashion Stylist
“To me, it feels like you’re walking barefoot with an added layer of protection, especially considering the lightweight soles of the shoes.I frequently use the Vibram V-Soul in black, considering it goes with anything and is comfortable enough to run errands in. When I want a pop of color in my outfit, I use the Vibram Groundsplay in fuchsia pink.
“I’d recommend wearing them on a sunny day while walking around your neighborhood or a nearby park, or even when running errands around the city (Get those steps in!). They’re also great shoes for working out, since they’re pretty lightweight.”
Javier Pimentel, DJ and PR Specialist
“I don't really do much outdoor activity, so I mostly wear it depending on my outfit! When I got them, I really battle-tested them at a rave. And to be fair, it was really comfortable. I’m not sure if I would do it again, but at least in the right setting or party, I would try and wear them.
“I think one of the best ways to describe it style-wise is that they're like advanced tabis, so when I was figuring out how to style them, that was my mindset. When it comes to wearing them, you feel really grounded to the floor, so you kind of feel everything. I find them comfortable, but if the roads are bad, I think it's something to take note of so you don't injure yourself.”
