The Redress Design Award is a sustainable fashion design competition organized by Hong Kong-based NGO Redress. The prestigious contest brings together applications from 49 countries, and here’s some good news for you: A Filipino designer was accepted as one of the semi-finalists!

Jann Christian Bungcaras is a young fashion designer who specializes in upcycling and reconstruction. He hails from Cebu. He studied Advanced and Basic Fashion Illustration and Design Studio One Design Problem-Solving at SoFA Design Institute. He also took up Basic Menswear and Basic and Advance Pattern-making at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines in Cebu.

Jann creates ready-to-wear creations and bespoke designs through his eponymous sustainable fashion brand. Many of his designs are inspired by childhood tales like The Little Prince and Little Red Ridinghood. As a result, his reconstructed garb feels youthful and ethereal, as if pulled directly from a child’s wildest imaginations. There are men’s looks with bonnets and realistic floral appliques. There’s a modern-day Le Petit Prince in an oversized felt shirt, complete with a knitted crown, a trail of tulle behind him like a cloud.

Jann’s Redress Design Award collection is under the menswear category. The collection is titled “Adam’s Dominion,” and it makes use of upcycled damaged textiles, unsold clothing waste, and fabric scraps.

“Adam was created by God to have dominion over the seas, over the Earth, and over the skies,” he explains on Instagram. “But as we learned the value of each resource upon eating the fruit of knowledge, we milked our dominions dry,  leaving corals bleached, the Earth boiling, and the skies covered in smog.”

“The Collection is a reflection of humanity’s failures and palpable impacts towards all of nature. And as we are now forced to stay inside, I beg all of you to look out and see that the world is better without us. It makes us question, ‘Why did God create us anyway?’”

The Redress Design Award (formerly EcoChic Design Award), was launched in 2011 in Hong Kong. It later on opened its doors to candidates from more countries, and fully went global in 2018. The competition aims to educate young designers to activate a circular fashion system in the future.
