We’re claiming it: 2022 will bear witness to the full re-emergence of the terno. Why? We’ve seen multiple brides get hitched in the distinctive butterfly sleeves all year—Jess Wilson memorably wed in a beautiful Vania Romoff minidress, and Filipina designer Jillian Joy San Juan made herself a terno gown for her own wedding. Beauty queens, too, (including Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza), have shown their devotion to the ultra-feminine silhouette. We can’t seem to escape the heritage outfit—it’s no longer a slumbering costume reserved for themed galas and Buwan ng Wika events, but a stylish, current option that’s taking up more space in the local fashion scene.
But make no mistake: Ternos haven’t stayed stagnant. Lately, they’ve been creatively reinvented to suit the modern palette. Beauty queens such as Bea Gomez, Catriona Gray, and Maxine Medina have all sported unique reimagined ternos, and we bet that they’ll be the first of many to take up the trend.

Filipina Beauty Queens Making a Case for Wearing Stylish Ternos
1. Beatrice Luigi Gomez
Bea Gomez rocked the coolest denim terno by fellow Cebuano designer Oscar James for a photoshoot. The top fit like armor, and featured detachable buttoned sleeves. She wore this terno during her interview with Marian Rivera the day after the Miss Universe 2021 pageant, too!

2. Catriona Gray
ICYDK, Catriona Gray appeared as a judge during the finale of the modeling competition Supermodel Me, which aired on AXN. Her evening look was a futuristic tie-dye print terno set by Jaggy Glarino, which featured a dramatic pointed collar and a peplum detail. She finished off the bold look with cyberpunk-esque gladiator sandals.

3. Maxine Medina
Maxine Medina, the Philippines’ 2016 Miss Universe bet, kept it subtle in a terno blouse, a black pencil skirt, and low heels. The OOTD may appear simple at first, but it teases the exciting future of the casual terno. It won’t be long before the terno shape grows into an ubiquitous presence, rendered in every possible fabric and color, becoming a proper wardrobe staple that’ll exist alongside passing trends.
