Concluding the Nokia-Mastercard Femme Visa Series of Fashion Watch series for 2008 is designer Cesar Gaupo. A legend in Philippine fashion scene, his credentials include training under fashion maven Salvacion “Slim” Higgins, and, until recently, being the designated creative director of Shanghai Tang. With Gaupo, his latest venture into couture footwear, Cesar has undoubtedly been re-launched into the spotlight.

Despite his confession that he didn't really have any one specific inspiration, his penchant for the Oriental was evident. Soft, origami folds; kimono tops; obi belts; the selection of rich brocades, jacquards, and iridescent silks; and even the vintage Chinese poster-girl hair gave off an Eastern vibe.

“It's about making certain statements.” Cesar said about this collection. With specially produced Gaupo heels, theatrical jewelry by Herbert Custodio, and extra-wide waist-whittling belts, one would think he was making quite the loud and proud statement. His keen eye for combining colors pulled everything together into a festive whole.

Look out for the sequined asymmetric dress worn by model Ria Bolivar with it's lightly feathered sash half hiding the bleached snake-embossed belt. The fully sequined skirt in old gold worn by Grace Tagle was also divine.

Cesar's pieces will be available at his Bel-Air atelier.
