There's something about Norman Noriega's Holiday 2011 show for Fashion Watch that is a tad menacing. The clothes, the styling, and the blown hair and wan makeup of the models all add to a forbidding atmosphere that bristles with a dark energy.
A focus on the clothes: Cut from black and ivory satin and a black and gray acid-print fabric, the pieces speak of Norman's street sensibility, but in a dressier way, this time. Compared to his Holiday 2010 collection, the garments here are finer and more tailored, hence more mature. Where he used to present oversized basics in easy cotton, now he's serving up bare-chested pantsuits for women, grim coats and long skirts, long zippered vests in satin, and acid print suits for men. Back alley tailoring in the cusp of night rather than sidewalk casual.
