The fashion industry mourns the loss of a legendary fashion designer. Ito Curata passed away earlier today, March 26. Ito was 60 years old.
Preview.ph got to speak with Renee Puno-Crisologo, whose family was a close friend of the designer. Here, her heartfelt message:
"Ito has always felt like family. For years, my family and I would spend holy week breaks and Christmas vacations together with him, his partner Bob, and son Taj, at our beach house. And every year, besides filling our house with a cornucopia of freshly baked breads and our favorite tapa from his hometown of Taal, he would fill our home with much love, light, and riotous laughter."
"Ito was fiercely loyal, compassionate, kind, and a source of joy for us and for many, many others. He was honest, thoughtful, and had a knack for knowing exactly what to say at exactly the right time, whether it be a perfectly timed pun or a string of heartfelt, encouraging words to uplift."
"We will miss you, Ito. And we will miss all the laughter. We love you!"
Ito Curata’s career in fashion design spanned more than 30 years. He made his mark in the industry with his signature timeless elegance, executed through classic silhouettes, impeccable draping, bows, and fine embellishments. It is his attention to detail and fine taste that has garnered him international acclaim.
His clientele consisted of stylish mavens of the metro to socialites in San Francisco, including Hollywood celebrity Sharon Stone.
Ito had been living in Manila with longtime partner Bob Miller since 2004. The couple adopted their son, lovingly known as Taj, in 2006.
In an interview with Inquirer, the designer shares his thoughts on parenthood: “Anyone can be a parent as long as you are able to love a child unconditionally. It may not be a perfect arrangement, but as long as the people in the arrangement love and care for each other, that’s all that matters.”
