Upon reading the title, you've probably been racking your brains trying to figure out what a "glove shoe" is. Well, don't let the image of a foot weirdly wrapped in leather distort this shoe's style potential. Fashion's top influencers are picking up on the trend and this shoe-of-the-moment is slowly becoming a cult favorite. Stay in the loop and get to know more about it below.
What is a glove shoe?
According to Vogue UK, the glove shoe "sucks to your foot like a glove," hence its name. It's made out of thin kid leather, an elasticated vamp, and is usually square-toed. It's like those roll-up ballet flats but softer and amped up with a low heel. Its distinguishing feature? It covers up your toe cleavage. (Must be a sign that grandma chic is here to stay!)
How did the trend start?
Back in 2011, designer Martiniano Lopez Crozet released the "glove shoe." (Yes, he also coined the term.) The style already gained a following at that time, but it is now slowly increasing in popularity. After Martiniano introduced the shoe, other brands started to follow suit. Rachel Comey's designs come with a wooden block heel while Celine's Phoebe Philo dipped her models’ feet in to-die-for minimalist colors for the S/S 2015 runway. Meanwhile, Maryam Nassir Zadeh gives us options in refreshing hues like violet and wasabi.
Who's wearing them?
For starters, Preview's previous editor-in-chief Pauline Juan was spotted sporting a pair of black Martiniano glove shoes. Lena Dunham seems to be full-on grandma with her preference for cozy socks. Even the model Jenny Albright was styled by Man Repeller with a shiny gold pair.
Why?
ELLE and Net-a-Porter have called it the shoe of summer 2016. This makes complete sense given our country's migraine-inducing heat—think of the glove shoe as a versatile and really comfortable addition to your hubadera wardrobe. Also, the shoe's a great transition from day to night because of its subtly sexy shape. The soft top and block heel even create a classic-meets-modern vibe!
How can I wear them?
You can wear them with absolutely anything given the right styling! Although the looks that permeate the Instagram universe have been very minimalist, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone by wearing your pair with crazy proportions.
