Oftentimes, we see Philippine textiles rendered as sunny ensembles fit for our hot climate. Rarely do we see these proudly local fabrics styled in layers and mixed with leather! This rare species is what Egay Ayag brought to the table during her presentation at the Panasonic Manila Fashion Festival Season 10. Her collection was melodious because all the elements were simply cohesive—a feat very difficult to pull off.

First, Egay Ayag’s designs are commendable because she was able to use such Philippine fabrics into totally wearable outfits. Think: trousers, coordinates, and yes, even as ponchos. It was quite the adventure that was made only more chic by the use of leatherette—proving that layering such fabrics can be worn even in our bipolar climate. For instance, a draped and ruffled leather top was worn with shiny printed pants, matched with a leather version of a sun hat. Everything was beautifully punctuated with vibrant warm hues like our golden Philippine skies.

The collection was an extravagant sartorial affair that unapologetically—and masterfully—layered leather with other fabrics. Case in point: a long-sleeved top in a local fabric was worn underneath a sleeveless leather coat with a matching colorful bag to boot. It’s as if it were saying, “Yes, you can strut around the metro in this!” If you ask us, we’re up for the challenge.

Ultimately, Egay Ayag showed us that there are myriad ways to wear local textiles and it doesn’t hurt to mix it with other fabrics as well. It’s a new formula for chic and we’re totally on board! See the rest of the collection below.
