Once I had a college professor tell our whole class that in the world of fashion design, everything has already been done. It’s just a matter of how others reinvent and reinterpret existing designs. Being ever so proud, (in our heads) we, the students, wanted to defy that and prove that designers are capable of thinking for themselves. And while I still believe that there are new techniques and innovations to be discovered, I now find that there is truth to what my prof had said. That professor by the way is John Guarnes.
Why the sudden recall of this lecture? Today, Rajo Laurel posted on his Instagram a picstitched photo of Jourdan Dunn walking in Versace’s couture 2015 show and Divine Lee wearing his own design at the first Philippine Fashion Ball. Is that the same dress we see? No, not really.
Now if you remember a few years back, this dress from Rajo’s Athletenique Spring/Summer 2012 collection was also compared to one from Anthony Vaccarello’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection

The irony is, designers will always feed off each others’ creative juices, even as they try to come up with something new to share to the world. You could be inspired by, or someone else could be inspired by you.
