Julien Macdonald Talks Diamond
We're excited to discover you're launching a new range with a new name. How did Diamond by Julien Macdonald come about?
I'm so thrilled to be launching a fun, young, glamorous line at Debenhams called Diamond. I decided to call it Diamond as diamonds sparkle and dazzle just like the girl who wears the Diamond range. Diamonds after all, are a girl's best friend, as the song goes.
How does the new collection differ from the existing Star by Julien Macdonald range at Debenhams?
I like to think of Diamond being the younger sister of Star. Diamond is fun and flirty; Star is sophisticated and glamorous.
What are the key pieces we should be snapping up for Spring?
To get the latest look, go for a one shoulder dress. Diamond features some fabulous dresses in bright colours. Animal print is also a must-have and adds a sexy edge to any style, from going-out tops, to party dresses and jumpsuits.
When you were growing up, what made you want to become a designer?
In fact, when I was young, I always wanted to be an actor or an artist. I never dreamed of being a fashion designer, but while I was in art college, I found I had a natural flair for colour and textiles. This in turn lead me to the path of fashion, which I am so grateful for as over the years I've had the pleasure of working with incredible people such as Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel and the brilliant Alexander McQueen.
Which celebrities do you think always look stylish?
I love the style of Rihanna, Kylie and Cheryl whom I have dressed, too. They are amazing, beautiful artists; they have fun and exude glamour—just the kind of girls that could wear Diamond.
Have any fashionable celebrities been an inspiration for Diamond?
Women who love fashion, love dressing up and love parties inspire the collection; but you don't have to be famous, just look great. I have lots of friends and people I see around me that inspire me, too.
Which is your favourite piece from the new collection?
Orange is my favourite colour this season so I love the one shoulder orange satin dress on Tali in the campaign coming later in the season. She looks great. In general I love bright uplifting colours that make you stand out from the crowd. I also love the all-in-one animal print jump suit—just put on a pair of high heels and makeup for a super sexy and cool look. The mini trench is a classic and works with everything.
We also hear that there is a Childrenswear collection in the pipeline, can you tell us more about that?
I am very excited about the new launch of the Julien Macdonald Girls range for Debenhams. It's fabulous and fun, for the girl who loves dressing up day to day or for a party. Full of fashionable pieces including diamante encrusted jeans, fabulous graphic tees, special party dresses with playful leopard print, combined with gold and silver glitz for a bit of sparkle.
Diamond by Julien Macdonald is exclusively available at Debenhams Shangri-La Plaza.
