The desire to make permanent what was once primeval and now fleeting—this is the origin of Wynn Wynn Ong's collection for 2011, simply and aptly called Life. "Born simply as a way of preserving and capturing nature,” the exquisite collection of one-off cuffs, neckpieces, brooches and earrings is the designer's creative amber, where she has enshrined the likenesses of floral and faunal creatures that have charmed and fascinated her.
Observing her surroundings in her weekend home in Anilao, Batangas, she realized that the environment that bristled around her then won't be around forever; perhaps it won't be there even for her young grandchildren. So Life was born as an ode to the present inhabitants of nature, and as an artful legacy for posterity.
“I tried to capture the barks of the trees that we love, and in whose shade, we dream. I wanted to capture the bright wing of a bird, or retrace the path of ants as they meandered through fallen tree trunks on our property,” Wynn says.
In keeping with her motif, she produced Life through an environmentally responsible manner, using recycled metal and sustainable or renewable materials and found objects as much as possible. “My challenge was to do it in ways that would help preserve their habitat,” she explains. “I tried to diminish my carbon footprint in their crafting and to be aware of the impact each of my choices [would make] on the environment my grandsons would grow up in.”
