Designer Spotlight: Proudrace Pat Bondoc and Rik Rasos let us get to know them as they present Heartcore, their latest collection.

Proudrace: a clothing label that started from a basics line with no hint and leads to the designers behind it. But as the brand's popularity grew here in Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, and even in the U.S., the designers surfaced. Meet Pat Bondoc and Rik Rasos, the masterminds behind Proudrace. Friends since university, they set out to build a brand, because (1) Pat felt like he never had anything to wear, and (2) Rik wanted to create and inspire.

"We started out as a t-shirt label and eventually wanted to take it to the next level by turning it into a full-fledged clothing line," the two elaborate. "We took a break from the t-shirts and started working on a basics line that we wanted to launch. But since we were just starting, there was no clear direction of what we wanted, everything was intuitive. We ended up making more samples than we imagined so we decided to edit it. From there we launched our first collection in late 2009. It was a bit of a struggle at first when we introduced our new style here in Manila and then it was picked up by Blackmarket, Singapore—that’s when we started being noticed outside of the country. We’re now on our fourth collection and everything just changed after we got the chance to sell outside of Manila."

Capitalizing on simple design aesthetics and the easy allure of wardrobe basics and essentials, Proudrace consistently churns out clothing separates in comfortable materials and solid colors. "We like to make pieces that you can easily incorporate into your existing wardrobe." Devoid of flashy elements, the clothes are a casual minimalist's dream. In fact, Pat and Rik cater to "those who appreciate minimalism and an artisanal approach to clothing. Anyone who can put their own take on our clothes and make it look their own. "

For this season, they present a collection called Heartcore, inspired by their overarching rock 'n roll and '90s influences. "We both grew up watching Alternative Nation in MTV. At that time, everything we saw on TV was so interesting. We absorbed everything and emulated it in the way that we dress up. We took inspiration from that and the rock legends, and used it for this collection. It’s still minimal with touches of grunge. We kept everything fresh and modern."

Cut largely from cotton—stretch, pique—modal, mesh, and twill in variations of closet basics (lengthy tees with oversized armholes, skirts with exaggerated slits), the pieces could make for a street stalker's uniform, open for endless styling iterations.
