Designer Spotlight: Mique Yapching

Designer Spotlight: Mique Yapching
Preview spiced up its list of Designers to Watch for 2009 with a little southern flavor. Cebu's own Mique Yapching brings his sense of fashion to the plate.

Mique is the youngest to make it to the list; quite an achievement for a 20-year old student. This style devotee is also a risk taker, with his latest gamble being a course shift (from Interior Design to Fashion Design) in his junior year of college, a move that permanently embeds him in the glorious world of fashion. Of that Mique only has this to say “I took the risk and I'm reaping.”

Style Bible brings you ten things we bet you didn't know about this brave young designer from down south:

What is your design style?
“I try to combine tricks of the past with the innovation of the future so I can make forward and relevant clothes for the present. “

What do you do when you're stuck in a rut and can't seem to find inspiration?
“I talk to myself in the mirror. Lol. Or pace the room again and again while still talking to myself until inspiration hits me.”

What's the best part of being a designer?
“You get to be who you are. You can express anything through your clothes: your mood, how your love-life is, and so on. You get to meet a lot of different beautiful people. Yes, some could be nasty but it's what makes the whole ride worthwhile. You just have to hold on tight and see where it will take you.”

Who is a model you'd love to work with?
“I'm in love with Agyness Deyn. Everything about her is just super. I also love Freja Beha Erichsen. I've worked with Jasmine Maierhofer, Grendel Alvarado and Joan Bitagcol before and I think they're hot divas. I guess I'd like to work with Michelle Panemanglor next. I think she's fierce!”

What is one of your favorite creations?
“There's this one-shoulder dress I made for a shoot. It's a simple dress. It's black and it's kind of surreal. It has pleats in the front. What I like the most is that on the right shoulder is a silhouette of a woman's face and the right sleeve is made up of human hair: long black locks that end just an inch or so above the elbow. Some of my friends thought it was creepy at first but when we fitted it on a real person, it turned out beautiful.”

What are you wearing today?
“I'm wearing my school uniform right now. If it were a weekend, I guess a low v-neck tee, a bomber jacket, lethal short shorts, and silver Doc Martens.”

What movie would best describe your life?
Factory Girl. I think that Edie Sedgwick was such a fragile girl. She made everyone around her happy. She was gullible and easy to read. I think I'm like her but without the controversy.”

What's something you do too much?
“Play online games”

What is one thing you loathe?
“Pretension”

What is one thing you love?
“My mom!”
