Designer Spotlight: Maco Custodio

Designer Spotlight: Maco Custodio

You can spot a pair of Maco Custodio-designed heels a mile away. Maco's shoes are sculptural, bold and fashion forward; a no-no for the fashionably timid. Maco's fierce brand of footwear possesses a certain sci-fi whimsy that factors in tremendously in his shoes' cutting edge appeal.

You guessed it! This designer is a definite shoe-in for Preview's Designers to Watch for 2009.

Style Bible gets to know Maco Custodio, shoe czar, a little better:

What makes your shoes different?
" I don't see my shoes as being different from the rest, technically. We have the same components; they are made of leather and there are no special instructions on how to wear them. I guess I can say that my shoes are different because each shoe I design has a story and a soul; I usually name them after a person close to my heart. "

What's the best part of being a designer?
" You get to see and meet celebrities and get invited to some exclusive parties...with free booze! yeeha!"

What is one of your favorite creations?
"I have these shoes named after the camel pose, Ustrasana. I call this pair Yoga Shoes, although it's not exactly worn for yoga. I'm simply inspired with the position, that's why the shoes have a hole. It's a wedge platform sandal with sculpted wood four inches high. It kind of looks like you're wearing a donut."

How many pairs of shoes have you made in your career so far?
"Enough to make a shoe-lover drop her jaw. hahaha."

How many pairs of shoes do you own?
"I only have around 15 or 20 pairs left. Some I gave to my relatives in the province."

What was the last thing you bought?
"A book, 'Elements of Japanese Design' by Boye Lafayette De Mente."

What is your favorite item from your closet?
"My hats! I have this black hat from H&M that my friend Charlotte gave me; I pair it with a jacket from Topman or Zara and any type of sneakers. The hat can really give justice to every plain pang-bahay attire."

What was the last text message you recieved?
"From Cristine Reyes, it said: Thanks Mac see you."

What's a habit you'd like to kick?
"Hoarding! Hoarding special leather, books, shirts and hats."

What are your other hobbies?
"Biking, learning how to play the violin again, or just having coffee with my friends after a busy day."
