Designer Spotlight: Joyce Makitalo

Artist, jewelry designer and certified free spirit Joyce Makitalo finds herself on Preview's Designers to Watch list for 2009. With such distinct-looking (not to mention gorgeous!) bling, we can definitely see why this one's a gal to watch.

Style Bible lets you in on ten things we bet you didn't know about Joyce Makitalo:

What's the best part of being a designer?
“Being appreciated for using creative license in designing because as you can see, I love to exaggerate.”

What do you do when you can't find inspiration?
“Grab the nearest Vogue. That's one thing I do too much- Vogue-buying. I get almost four in a month: U.S., British and Australia. And teen! Can't get enough of their genius. Also, it helps me with my work. I learn a lot just by reading it.”

What's your signature personal style like?
“I am a bit outlandish- Tibet meets high street. And era dressing is fun! Probably because I'm a frustrated theater performer.”

What are you wearing today?
“Right now, jammies. You caught me at a bad time.”

If you had no limitations, what would you like to be wearing today?
The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club jacket and a full-length renaissance-inspired gown by Christian Lacroix, no shoes. Then I'd have my portrait taken.”

What are your shopping habits like?
I'm always on the lookout for something to add to my eclectic wardrobe. To get a 'just been to Turkey, Morocco and London' look, I go to Zara. Last thing I bought was an acrylic fur stole from Zara. I have way too many fake fur stoles and vests! Geez.

Who's closet would you like to raid and why?
“I don't like raiding closets as much as I do raiding bauls. I would love to raid your granny's baul any day.”

What is playing on your i-pod now?
“Chanting music! Very good for the mind and the soul.”

What was the last book you read?
Don't Eat This Book by Morgan Spurlock. Such a hilarious and informative book! Hey you guys, stop eating fastfood.”

Who was the last person you texted and what did the message say?
“ My friend Lynn: Sorry I did not make it to the pool party.”
