She has joined Philippine Fashion Week three times, and has always been inspired by the jet-setting woman who, despite her itinerant lifestyle, never compromises fashion and style for dowdy comfort. Jona Ballaran, one of Preview's Ten Designers to Watch for 2010, again channeled the traveling woman as her muse for her Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2010 collection entitled Points of Variation.
Having been inspired by barren landscapes from her travels in the Philippines all the way to Morocco (her stint as the costume designer for Chito S. Roño's musical Emir exposed her to these landscapes), Jona's Points of Variation consists of easy, comfortable, yet classically elegant ensembles with a focus on softness, minimalism, and fluidity. To achieve this, she draped and cut relaxed silhouettes from different kinds of chiffon and silk satin in muted colors such as soft nudes, pale peach, and mild salmon.
The easy elegance and undeniable wearability of her collection largely stood out from the cascade of 100+ shows in Philippine Fashion Week last May, prompting the Preview editors to place her in this year's Ten Designers to Watch list. A laudable decision, indeed, for there is undoubtedly a whole lot of exciting visions and creations yet to come from this young designer.
