Twenty-one-year old budding designer Erika Adona has some pretty big doors opening for her. During the Preview Emerging Fashion Talent Awards (PEFTA), she was chosen by legendary designer Inno Sotto to participate in next year's installation of Fashion Watch. Hand-picked from the nine young talents for her technique (she showed an incipient dexterity with fiberglass, an incredibly difficult material to work with) Erika is well on her way to establishing herself as one of Manila's young designers to watch.
With an interior design degree from Mapúa Institute of Technology and an ongoing fashion design course from Slim’s Fashion and Arts School under her belt, this emerging designer has a lot going for her, design- and skill-wise. Defining her work as always "simple" yet "creative and artistic," the 6-piece collection she showed during the PEFTA fashion show, The World of Barbarella, fuses the two disciplines of her education while telling the story of her inspiration.
"The World of Barbarella is based on the 1960’s sci-fi movie entitled Barbarella," Erika says. "I got the colors from the '60s like purple, red, and neon pink. The architectural buildings of the era also inspired me because of their amazing structures and shapes, which I applied in the silhouettes of my collection."
"I wanted it to be very simple and clean without too much embellishment," she continues. "I made use of shiny materials like metallic chiffon, spandex leatherette, clear plastics and fiberglass because of their high tech and futuristic look. A lot of techniques were used—some are hand-sewn, some needed to draped, and some needed to be molded perfectly like the fiberglass, which took me a lot of patience just to make it look good and shiny. The woman I envision wearing my collection is a very sexy woman that has a strong attitude, is very confident, and is a fighter (Barbarella is a heroine)."
When her name was announced by Inno during the ceremony, inviting her to show a collection in the annual Fashion Watch where she'll be joining twenty of the country's top designers, Erika broke into tears. "I wasn’t expecting that I would make it this far because this is my first time to join a competition as big as this," she said. "I am very excited to see what will happen after this big event."
