Designer Portfolios: Joyce Makitalo

Joyce Makitalo is a free spirit, a real modern-day hippie. She's an artist to the very core. She paints (check out joycemakitalo.blogspot.com to see her stuff), she dabbles in music (she plays the acoustic guitar, the bass, and the zithar. Yes, you read that right, the somewhat obscure Indian zithar. ) and she excels in the graphic arts. Like all true originals, these forms of artistry aren't nearly enough for our artiste to express her boundless imagination. Thus, Joyce zeroes in on yet another avenue to channel her creativity, but this time, it's of the fashion sort.

So begins Joyce Makitalo's foray into the world of jewelry design.

“I like to pretend. I don't want to live in the now; I'm a dreamer” gushes Joyce. Her inner fantasist spills over into her jewelry designs that hint at lavish, ancient empires, while still possessing the earthiness and spirited flair of la vie boheme. Her scarf necklaces, cuffs, and chunky statement rings are made from talismanic crystals and oversized semi-precious stones set in solid brass, triple-dipped in 24K gold. They are identifiably Joyce-bright, bold and very luxe-hippie.

Joyce is making her own mark in the fashion world. Fashionistas like Mai Kaufman and Techie Hagedorn rocking some Joyce Makitalo pieces. Rajo Laurel, who stocks her pieces in House of Laurel, is also a fan, recommending her stuff as an alternative to real deal bling for some of his brides.
