Coco gave us Chanel before having Karl Lagerfeld take over. Louis Vuitton had Marc Jacobs and now has Nicholas Ghesquiere who came from Balenciaga. If you think about it, most famous high end labels offer a lineage of designers who add more milestones to its already rich history. So what’s the story behind the French label Céline?
During a talk entitled The Philo Factor: Reinventing Cool, designer Phoebe Philo said, "Céline had no recognisable silhouette, no famous historic designers, it hadn't been licensed out in the ‘70s and ‘80s as many other brands had." This gave her the gruelling task of having to solidify the brand’s identity upon appointment as creative director in 2008. Though that was never really verbalized, it’s safe to assume that the pressure was on Phoebe who claims that she finds mediocrity hard.
Six years later into her tenure, she managed to make the brand somehow irresistible to all sorts of women. What about it exactly? Phoebe hasn’t figured it out yet. But we sure can agree that she is a designer who knows what women want and need. So for our latest installment of the Designer Bag Index, we turn to the fashionable and functional bags of Céline. Read on and find out their story.
