Demna Gvasalia, the person behind the hottest fashion label in Paris right now, Vêtements, has officially replaced Alexander Wang as creative director for Balenciaga.

After Wang showed his Spring/Summer 2016 collection during Paris Fashion Week as his last for the brand, the French fashion house’s owner, Kering, finally announced his successor five days after. Balenciaga’s Chief Executive Officer and President Isabelle Guichot mentioned in an exclusive interview with WWD that they wanted to find someone who has vision and is capable of reshuffling the cards. “I was really amazed by his ability to develop an approach to the brand that was really new and that was really his ownwhat should be the attitude, what should be the silhouette, what should be the volumes,” Isabelle said about Gvasalia.

Alexander Wang has worked for the fashion power house since December 2012 until he decided to focus on and develop his own New York-based brand. He is known for using black as the predominant color in his designs, but also surprised everyone when he chose to experiment with bright colors for his Spring 2009 collection. His urban designs are to-die-for and, just last year, he released his own collection for Swedish-based fashion retailer H&M.

Meanwhile, Demna Gvasalia’s designs focus on re-proportioned classics with the edge of having raw street sensibilities. The Georgian’s label is a recent breakout in the industry, which became popular for its Kanye-esque oversized pieces, floral dresses, and its reconstruction of pieces that people already wear—such as biker jackets, sweaters, and jeans. He was able to showcase these in his recent electrifying Fall 2015 show wherein he attracted major magazine editors and celebrities such as Jared Leto and Kanye West himself. Gvasalia worked behind the scenes at Louis Vuittion for a short while, and has now taken over Balenciaga as its new artistic director of collections. Talk about making the jump from being an underground fashion hero to artistic director of an established couture brand.
