The sneakers' construction has barely shifted, but the way people wear it has–as adopted by athletes, musicians, and anyone drawn to its unfussy appeal.

Below, we look back at how the Chuck Taylor All Star began, the man behind its name, and the designs that have kept it relevant for over a century.

About the Shoe

History of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star

The Converse Rubber Shoe Company opened in 1908 in Malden, Massachusetts, founded by Marquis Mills Converse. A year later, its first products—rubber galoshes— rolled off the line. The brand began producing canvas footwear by 1910 to retain its workers during the summer months, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become a century-defining sneaker.

In 1917, Converse introduced the Non-Skid, one of the first shoes designed specifically for basketball. Its diamond-patterned outsole provided traction, while the canvas upper offered flexibility and breathability, which was a radical innovation for its time. By 1919, coaches requested darker versions to better conceal wear, and the All Star was officially born.

In 1922, a young basketball player named Charles “Chuck” Taylor joined Converse as a salesman. Energetic, persuasive, and deeply passionate about the game, Chuck traveled across the United States hosting basketball clinics, promoting the shoes, and gathering feedback from players. His input led to key design refinements that improved performance and comfort. In 1934, his name was added to the ankle patch, cementing the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star as the first signature basketball shoe in history.

In the 1930s, Converse become the official sponsor of the first U.S. Men’s Olympic Basketball Team. The event introduced a white canvas version of the All Star, accented with red and blue pinstripes, which was a patriotic update that would define its classic look.

By the 1970s, it had transcended its athletic roots. Artists, musicians, and skaters adopted the shoes as emblems of individuality, as worn by punk bands like The Ramones and rebels of every kind who valued authenticity over flash.

Chuck became a traveling ambassador for basketball, hosting clinics across the United States and abroad, teaching technique while promoting the shoe he helped refine. His passion for the game and charisma made him a natural salesman, so much so that he’s often credited with spreading basketball’s popularity itself.

For his contributions, Chuck Taylor was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969, the same year he passed away.
