It isn't as intimidating as it sounds!

You’ve probably seen dozens of outfits—by brands, celebrities, and influencers—that make use of tons of color without looking like they haphazardly threw on every shade of the rainbow. Now, playing with color may seem complex, but there are numerous simple techniques to achieve that well-planned, stylish look. Our favorite? Color blocking!

What is color blocking?

Color blocking is a fashion method wherein one combines two or more (usually contrasting) colors in a single outfit. To achieve a bolder look, you can use complementary colors (colors that are on the opposite side of the color wheel), but for those who are beginners in color-coordination, any combination of hues will do.

Just like the infinite number of colors, the possibilities with color blocking are endless. But if you want a quick guide, below you’ll find 8 color blocked outfits by our fashion-forward local celebs!

9 Color Block Outfit Ideas, As Seen on Celebrities

1. The simplest color combination for color blocking is probably one you’ve already worn before. Anne Curtis’ simple black look is taken to another level with the addition of a stark white headband. Such a timeless look!

2. If you want a little bit more than just a black and white look, try adding pops of color, like how Ashley Garcia did here with red! It’s Parisian chic meets street-style cool. We recommend choosing colors with the same undertones—either cool or warm—for a more cohesive look.

3. Take inspiration from Sarah Lahbati and pair a black base with pastel tones for an edgy look that’s still casual enough for running errands.

4. For those who still can’t let go of their neutrals, try pairing it with a muted pop of color, like Ylona Garcia did with her beanie! Combining muted colors with neutrals can ensure that your outfit won't look too all over the place.

5. Believe it or not, Sue Ramirez’s brown-and-beige ensemble does in fact use the color blocking technique! For a subtler color-blocked 'fit, use colors in similar color families, but make sure they aren’t the exact same shade. This trick will create an outfit that looks chic and refined because it’s so close to a monochromatic look, but still has different shades to provide dimension.

6. An upgraded version of using the same color family is by adding a contrasting color as a point piece. Here, Heart Evangelista tastefully paired her hot pink purse with three different shades of blue to really make the accessory pop. Since the base colors are all blue hues, the color choices don’t appear too overwhelming.

7. Here’s one example of a complementary color combination. Maine Mendoza’s layered purple and yellow sweaters look absolutely perfect together. Notice how both colors are of similar vibrance, helping the outfit look more seamless.

8. Sue Ramirez just might be the queen of color blocking. Her orange and pink OOTD just looks so fresh! If you want to go bold by creating a look with lots of vibrant color, keep in mind to add a neutral tone (in this case, her white sneakers and the black stripes on her socks) to balance everything out.

9. This two-piece is too cute! Angelina Cruz looks like she just popped straight out of our favorite 2000s romcom. While the hues of pink and orange are totally bright, the hint of skin from the crop top breaks up the hues for a more casual feel.
