Peter Hamby, who has worked at CNN for almost a decade, has recently left his position to join Snapchat. Despite the apparent irrationality behind his decision, the move alludes to Snapchat’s desire to expand beyond fleeting messaging.
Last January, Snapchat added a new “Discover” section, which features original content from a dozen known publishers like ESPN, National Geographic, and CNN. Hamby was known, as The New York Times puts it, “for his willingness to experiment with new forms of digital media to deliver news broadcasts.” With Snapchat’s hopes of expanding into a social media platform and new Discover section, Hamby will certainly have the means to experiment further, reaching millions of people with thoughtful snippets - sexts and cat videos, be damned.
