Filipino talent strikes again! The Philippines’ finest fashion designers continue to make great leaps in the international scene. This time around, a shining example comes in the form of Italy-based Chona Bacaoco, who recently designed a dress at Cannes Film Festival for none other than a Gucci scion.

In a May 29 interview on TeleRadyo, the Ilongga designer detailed the process of being chosen to design the Cannes red carpet ensemble of Drusilla Gucci, the great-granddaughter of founder Guccio Gucci

“I submitted my design and I didn’t hear back for some time so I thought maybe she didn’t pick me. So I said I will just try again next time,” Chona recalled. “And then five days before the Cannes Film Festival, they called me. ‘Chona, Drusilla picked you to be her designer for her red carpet exposure.’”

Drusilla’s chosen dress in question was a semi-translucent floor-length piece, detailed by floral embroidery throughout its silhouette. The bespoke number also featured a flowing cape that draped from the neck of the Gucci descendant.

Chona, who helms the fashion house MM Milano The Brand, was still in shock when she received the big phone call.

“I couldn’t believe that someone like me [would dress up someone like her]. I still have a lot of things to learn in this industry. But dressing someone so iconic–her mom is a fashion critic–that actually scares me more than dressing the great-granddaughter of Gucci,” she said.

However, this is just one of the proud recent achievements that Chona has ticked off her list. Adding to her long list of feats, the designer was also the mind behind the Cannes ensembles of Morroco-born influencer Mila Suarez and Italian artist Selvaggia Roma.

Elsewhere, the designer previously produced the Milan Fashion Week show of the revered Filipino designer Michael Cinco.

Congrats, Chona!
