Last Saturday night, we had the honor of attending the eighth Red Charity Gala, a ball that highlights one designer’s craftsmanship, and this year it was Chito Vijandre. In a display of dramatic haute couture dripping with details that needed multiple viewings to fully appreciate, he sent down a parade of fashion that took us through time. From pre-colonial times to the Elizabethan era, the 40-piece collection was a lesson in clothing, featuring key pieces from their respective times—think tribal woven fabric providing flashes of vibrancy, saucy Spanish ruffles as a nod to our early influences, and floral appliqué paired with piled hair for a touch of Marie Antoinette.
One section we loved in particular was a roaring twenties-inspired segment that brought to life all our flapper fantasies. The looks were paired with bleached brows, a glossy black eye, and dark lips, all of which lent the mostly pastel palette a harder edge. How they made the look gave us an interesting insight: Instead of using black eyeshadow and gloss for the eyes, black lipstick was used. Not only did the pigment lend its natural sheen to the eye, it also guaranteed longer staying power sans gloss, making it more comfortable to wear, as well.
