Who is Diana Vreeland? Well, before Anna Wintour, heck, before fashion editors became big personalities and influencers, there was the French fashion doyenne, Diana Vreeland—self-made and an inveterate tastemaker. She was at the center of American style for five long decades, whose irreverent attitude toward fashion and art catapulted the pages of Harper’s Bazaar from 1936 to 1962, and Vogue from 1962 to 1971 as editor-in-chief. She was named to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1964. Though she had a reputation for being tough to work with, her brilliance, vision, and vim were hard to miss and were truly inspiring.

This March, distinguished TV/movie/stage actress and Preview Best Dressed, Cheri Gil, lends her range in the portrayal of Diana Vreeland in a one-woman show called “Full Gallop.” The play is set in August 1971, a few months after Diana was fired from Vogue and became a consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With Cheri Gil’s patrician demeanor, there’s no doubt she fits the role to a T. (Why, Diana Vreeland was a prominent figure in society and kept the company of the likes of Coco Chanel, Andy Warhol, Jackie Kennedy, and Jack Nicholson.) By the same token, Cherie Gil is quite known for her classy sartorial picks—always well put-together and a style peg for many.
