For her wardrobe of the night, the actress and former beauty queen recruited seasoned fashion designer Rajo Laurel, who dressed her in a bowed black number with a billowing sleeve. In an Instagram post, the celebrity-favorite couturier revealed that he took cues from Filipino elements for the dress’ foundation.
“When [Charlene] asked me to make something for the @lebal.paris to attend her daughter’s [debut], I immediately began thinking of our culture and heritage,” he wrote. “‘How can I make it Filipino but contemporary and global[?]”

For the piece’s base, Rajo ultimately gleaned from two Filipiniana elements: the pañuelo, a shawl draped around the shoulders during the Spanish colonial era; and the tapis, a rectangular cloth wrapped around the waist, often seen in indigenous weaves from the Cordillera region.

“It was truly an honor to wear your creation @rajolaurel in Paris,” Charlene wrote on Instagram, as she showed off the final product. “You are amazing!! Truly proud and grateful to be given the honor to wear a gown that’s truly [Pinoy].”

You looked amazing, Charlene!
