5 Fashionable Celebrities and Their Instagram-Famous Pets

In celebration of National Pets Day, Preview puts the spotlight on five Instagram-famous pets beloved by their celebrity moms.

"For our pets, we are their whole lives. So it's up to us to give them a great one."

They say no one can love you more unconditionally than a pet. Their attention and steadfast loyalty to their owners provide for an undescribable kind of companionship, only barely half-captured through the multitude of tear-jerking films released over the years. While our pets can love us for a lifetime, sadly they're not always granted the same energy back. We occasionally hear of stray cats slaughtered in the streets, lost dogs man-handled, captured, and kept for sport, or animals inhumanely brought up and breeded for money. The influx of these types of bleak news reports just prove that we have a long way to go when it comes to properly treating pets (and every other animal for that matter) with the care and respect that they deserve. The questions is, how do we help fix it and where do we start?

In celebration of National Pets Day last April 11, we shone the light on some of our favorite Preview pets in the most fashionable way possible, as illustrated by Denver Balbaboco. We talked to their equally stylish owners about what it really means to love and care for our furry (and not so furry) little friends.

Heart Evangelista and Panda

"They’re not an accessory; you don’t just buy them because they’re cute as puppies and then you abandon them when they’re older. A relationship with a dog (or any other pet) is supposed to be a lifetime." - Heart Evangelista

How would you describe Panda’s personality?

“Panda is very sophisticated. She’s not as friendly, I guess because she’s also very troubled because she has trust issues. But she’s the sweetest girl to me and to her family. She just doesn’t like to socialize so much.”

If you could improve one thing about animal welfare in the Philippines, what would it be and why?

“It would be the mentality of people when they say askal, it’s asong kalye. That’s why I like to promote Panda [as an] aspin because they’re actually asong Pinoy, and it doesn’t mean you have to see beyond the breed. It’s not about the breed. I think Panda represents that. Panda doesn’t have any kind of breed. She’s a mix of all breeds yet she’s beautiful, so you have to give them a chance and that’s it. I think that’s what [other people] think; [but] just because you [paid for them] or they’re expensive [doesn't mean] that they’re worthier of your love.”

What’s one important thing that you think pet owners should keep in mind when taking care of their pets?

“At the end of the day, they’re like kids. They’re family. They’re not an accessory; you don’t just buy them because they’re cute as puppies and then you abandon them when they’re older. A relationship with a dog (or any other pet) is supposed to be a lifetime.”

Anne Curtis and Mogwai

"When you get a pet, you don’t decide on a whim. You really think well and hard if you can provide for this little being you are bringing into your household... They aren’t just your pet/s. They are your family.” - Anne Curtis

How would you describe Mogwai's personality?

“Mogwai is very sweet and malambing. He loves to be pet and cuddled. “

What's your favorite thing about Mogwai?

“I love his eyes, his sometimes grumpy looking face, and his sweet personality.”

If you could improve one thing about animal welfare in the Philippines, what would it be and why?

“I wish there were more shelters across the nation where animals could get a second chance at a better life and have a place where they are safe, and get proper treatment and care until they find a forever home. “

What's one important thing that you think pet owners should keep in mind when taking care of their pets?

“When you get a pet, you don’t decide on a whim. You really think well and hard if you can provide for this little being you are bringing into your household. Like, will you have time to play with them, make them feel loved and wanted? And allow them to be inside your home with you as part of the family and not in a cage?

"They feed off of your emotions. If you love them, they will love you back with all their heart. You become their whole world. So ALWAYS keep that in mind. They aren’t just your pet/s. They are your family.”

Janine Gutierrez and Punchy

“For our pets, we are their whole lives. So it's up to us to give them a great one.” - Janine Gutierrez

How would you describe Punchy’s personality?

“He was actually a gift from my fans so I was so surprised and wasn't planning on getting a dog but it was love at first sight. He's the most energetic, malambing, playful, ceaseless ball of energy.”

What's your favorite thing about Punchy?

“The way he tilts his head when he's listening to you and how he loves everyone he meets.”

If you could improve one thing about animal welfare in the Philippines, what would it be and why?

"From my understanding, the Animal Welfare Act permits the killing of dogs and cats for the purpose of population control. I wish we could instead offer more information about the benefits of spaying and neutering [rather than] resorting to this extreme measure."

What’s one important thing that you think pet owners should keep in mind when taking care of their pets?

“For our pets, we are their whole lives. So it's up to us to give them a great one.”

Coleen Garcia and Anya

"As far as Philippine animal welfare goes, I think more can be done especially when it comes to establishing and enforcing laws that protect animals. People need to be more educated and aware of how wrong it is to abuse animals, and that they can be punished for it." - Coleen Garcia

How would you describe Anya's personality?

“Anya may look really cranky and masungit, but she is actually so affectionate! In fact, this breed is the most affectionate cat breed I’ve ever encountered. They’re never moody (which cats are actually known for); they ALWAYS want to be near us and they always want our attention. They could never get enough of us. They even wait for us outside the room and greet us at the front door whenever we get home.

"What sets her apart from our other cats is her grace and her beautiful blue eyes. She is definitely the most graceful, poised, regal one out of all our cats. She used to sleep under our sheets, and I love it cause her body gets so warm so it would keep me warm, too. She can be very feisty, and she enjoys a good balance of alone time and a bit of socializing when it comes to other cats. She can fetch, too!”

What's your favorite thing about Anya?

“She was a game-changer! Billy used to hate cats (like, hate), and he also happens to be allergic to them. But one day, he decided to get me Anya as a gift ‘cause I missed my cats (who I adopted but had to give away cause of Billy’s allergies.) When we got her, he just fell in love with her! So much so that we now have four Sphynx cats! They don’t trigger his allergies. Anya will always be special though, not only cause she’s the first and most beautiful, but also because she has the most balanced personality.”

If you could improve one thing about animal welfare in the Philippines, what would it be and why?

“I really pray that all animals would be treated with care and compassion. It deeply saddens me when I see dogs chained up or caged. I also hate it when I see people harm animals for no reason, like throwing rocks at cats and dogs, even shooting them with pellet guns! Animals are such gentle, loving, innocent creatures that deserve to be loved because of their capacity to love us unconditionally.

As far as Philippine animal welfare goes, I think more can be done especially when it comes to establishing and enforcing laws that protect animals. People need to be more educated and aware of how wrong it is to abuse animals, and that they can be punished for it. I also believe there should be more ways for spay/neuter procedures to be more accessible even to strays and to those who cannot afford it. We have so many strays here in the Philippines, so I think it would really help.”

What's one important thing that you think pet owners should keep in mind when taking care of their pets?

“I think we all just need to be reminded that having a pet is definitely a big responsibility. It’s one thing to be able to feed and support them, but another thing entirely to have the time and effort needed in really caring for them. Our pets invest everything they are in us. They are so loving and devoted, and their whole lives revolve around us. That’s how much love they have to give, and that’s why we are so blessed to have them. I can say that my pets definitely help in relieving me of stress and negative emotions, on a daily basis. They deserve not only our love, but also our respect. We are here to care for God’s creations.”

Tricia Gosingtian and Wabi

"Be a responsible pet parent. Think of them like your own children." - Tricia Gosingtian

How would you describe Wabi’s personality?

“Wabi is a dog that you can’t help but love. He is perpetually smiling (which makes me smile more often), and he has the weirdest but most endearing quirks and habits.”

What's your favorite thing about Wabi?

“Wabi taught me unconditional love like no other.”

If you could improve one thing about animal welfare in the Philippines, what would it be and why?

“I wish more malls and establishments would be more open to allow pets inside.”

What’s one important thing that you think pet owners should keep in mind when taking care of their pets?

“Be a responsible pet parent. Think of them like your own children. Bring them to the vet whenever necessary, feed and groom them properly, let them be free to explore the world, and not just confine them in a cramped cage.”
