Buy The Book A new shoppers' book celebrates Filipino genius
50 Must-Buys in Manila is a short-but-sweet read that aims to celebrate Filipino talent and prove that Pinoy products are definitely of international caliber. It lists 50 high-quality, locally made goods in the categories of food & drink, clothing, shoes & accessories, jewelry, health & beauty, home, gifts, toys for boys, and arts & culture.

The Authors
Janina Dizon Hoschka is a jewelry designer whose family has been in the business since the early 1940s. With a degree from the Gemological Institute of America, an apprenticeship with a leading Israeli diamond distributor, finalist statuses in three De Beers Diamond International Awards, and a self-named jewelry store at the Peninsula Manila under her belt, she's got her field covered. More than just a jewelry designer, Janina is a style icon who has been on the coveted Preview Best Dressed list.

Michael Salientes' celebrity in the fashion world is impossible to ignore. The former Fashion Editor of the avant-garde Details magazine in New York, Michael continues to pursue a fashion journalism path with stints as Fashion Editor and Creative Director of various local magazines and campaigns. One of Manila's premier fashion stylists, he is the creative mind behind several fashions shows, shoots, and ad campaigns.

The Verdict
With its 97 pages, 50 Must-Buys in Manila makes for a quick and informative read. The book suffers a bit from this brevity, however. Readers could certainly benefit from a wider variety of more affordable, equally high-quality alternatives, especially with shoppers' pockets feeling the economic crunch. Also, a few celebrated fashion greats like Lulu Tan-Gan, and Emi Jorge's Solea, are, curiously enough, absent on the list.

Otherwise, the book gives a good mix of custom-made/bespoke as well as ready-to-wear items. A smörgåsbord of vivid photos do their share to entice, and quotes from the featured designers and store owners give insider info that is very much appreciated.

Needless to say, 50 Must-Buys in Manila leaves readers wanting more…and this is a good thing. We hope that a second, and perhaps even third edition would be welcomed by shoppers' with open arms.

50 Must-Buys in Manila is available at Fully Booked at P549 a copy.
