When a designer pegs his or her brand as a champion of minimalism, chances are, the pieces can look quite mundane. It may appear too serious and extremely pared back. Colors and silhouettes are highly simplified, too. So when 24-year-old Australian designer Dion Lee entered the fashion arena in 2009, he was poised to make you rethink how you look at minimalist designs.
In fact, he's got a number of local celebs we can list as his fans. The likes of Heart Evangelista, Janine Gutierrez, Bea Alonzo, and more have been spotted favoring Dion's designs but just what about his pieces that make all these stylish girls wanting more? Below, we break down the brand's DNA and why all the cool celebs are so into it now.
Dion Lee hails from Sydney, Australia. He established his eponymous brand in 2009 and has since then sat as its Creative Director. He debuted at Australia Fashion Week at the young age of 24, just after graduating from the Sydney Institute of Technology the year before. After his first show, the spotlight quickly shone on the designer and soon, he was invited to present in major international fashion weeks in London and New York, the latter which he now calls his second home.
Since being catapulted in the global fashion scene, the Dion Lee has become a fixture in exclusive retailers like Net-A-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman, Selfridges, and Lane Crawford. In Australia, he manages six flagship stores.

The brand instantly became a fashion insider's fave because of its perfect encapsulation of contrasting elements. Dion Lee describes its aesthetic as "Technical but sensual. Sculptural and fluid. Complex and minimal."
The designer is heavily influenced by the Australian lifestyle, its surf culture, swimwear, and sportswear that he couples with a technical approach on sharp tailoring. He's known to play with cutout silhouettes, cheeky negative spaces that incorporate the beauty of the wearer's body underneath.
But apart from its innate sartorial merits, the brand instantly became a household name after the Duchess of Sussex wore a custom Dion Lee dress, which was later on revealed to be part of their then upcoming new collection.
A crashed website and a huge influx of pre-ordering later, the brand found itself caught in the aftermath of the "Meghan Markle effect." But since then Dion Lee brand has cemented its place in the fashion world and has become popular as ever.
Manila Gets to Know Dion Lee
Believe it or not, most of Manila's It girls have long been wearing the Australian brand before Meghan even got her hands on that navy frock. Georgina Wilson-Burnand was spotted wearing a navy blue slip dress on a vacay trip to Boracay...in 2016!
Similarly, Isabelle Daza-Semblat listed her black Dion Lee turtleneck as a staple in her closet back in 2016, too. But perhaps we can credit the It girls' fascination with the brand to Martine Cajucom-Ho who was already traipsing from Australia to Manila wearing the brand's skirt back in 2015.
Who wears the brand
Today, it's not just the It girls who are obsessed with the brand. A number of local stars have also gotten in on the Dion Lee high.
Heart Evangelista experiments on sheer pieces and even got the same piece that Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach has worn.
Pia Wurtzbach was also seen loving this fiery red slouchy coordinates from the brand.
Bea Alonzo turns to the brand for her casual wear and event wardrobe needs.
Janine Gutierrez is also a fan of Dion Lee, as its pieces are her perfect travel companions.
