For decades, renowned fashion street style photographer Bill Cunningham documented thousands of New Yorkers in their best sartorial wear by the Louis Vuitton boutique, corner 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. As he passed on, New York City remembers the veteran photographer by renaming the said corner after him.
A ceremony marked the retitling and was attended by New York Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute former curator Harold Koda and The New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet.
While the "Bill Cunningham Corner" will only last temporarily, as permanent street renamings will require complicated legislative process, the New York City mayor is still looking for other lifelong ways to honor Bill.
In a statement, Mayor Bill de Blasio says, “Bill Cunningham turned our sidewalks into runways and New Yorkers into models. His vivid photos captured our city’s diversity in every sense of the word, and helped define New York as the fashion capital of the world.”
