President Noynoy Aquino's swan song may have lasted over two hours, but our verdict on 2015's SONA red carpet was finalized way before his speech even began. This year, a few of our best dressed staples like Heart Evangelista and Tootsy Angara fell short (we still give them points for looking radiant!), and newcomers dressed to impress. Below, the five ladies who made the case for simplicity with their respective takes on the various traditional styles.
She's a big fan of JC Buendia's barongs (she's worn them numerous times with jeans, maxi skirts, and palazzo trousers), and this look is just as well done. Not a lot of women can rock the barong and look oh-so-chic in them.
Women like Dawn Zulueta can wear a sack and still manage to look impeccable. But what makes her stand out every single time is the fact that she sticks to a) simple yet classic designs, and b) the elegance of the color white. This year, designer Cary Santiago decided to modernize her go-to equation with ruffled rosé sleeves. In the battle of the white frock, Dawn trumped Heart.
It's refreshing to see the Queen of All Media in a hue other than sunshine-y yellow for a change. Styled by Kim and Boop Yap, the powder blue Michel Leyva serpentina Filipiniana brought a youthful glow to the president's sister, especially with her hair tied in a sleek ponytail.
Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez
One to favor intricate lace appliques on her pastel ternos, Lucy Torres-Gomez again stole the show with her signature relaxed yet put together sensibilities. She arrived fashionably late with her husband and daughter fresh from a trip to Switzerland, but we don't see any signs of jet lag from this beauty at all.
Shalani Soledad- Romulo
In a sea of nudes and pastels, Shalani's Anthony Ramirez emerald filipiniana stood out. We were torn between her and Atty. Karen Jimeno as both sported plain jewel toned frocks. But it was the draping in Shalani's dress that made us pick her over the esteemed lawyer.
