By now, Sen. Nancy Binay is already a pro when it comes to handling social media heat. In her six years as a senator, she's received her fair share of negative comments mostly stemming from the annual State of the Nation Address' red carpet.
In fact, Sen. Nancy revealed in an interview that she even had to apologize to Randy Ortiz, the designer who made her 2014 SONA outfit. “May kasalanan ako kay Randy. Kasi yung skirt ko pala parang may tali dun sa may palda na hindi ko nahugot…nagmukha talaga siyang bubble skirt,” she quips. And because of the said fashion faux pas, Sen. Nancy easily became a meme factory.
Still determined to nail her red carpet look with a more positive outlook, Sen. Nancy prepared well for this year's SONA. She chose a powder blue terno, which she hopes will appease her bashers. In it, her goal is to end her senatorial term on a "decent" note, she told reporters.
True to her word, Sen. Nancy showed up looking ladylike and polished with a sharp bob. And to make light of online trolls, she even posted a meme of herself last week on Facebook in the same blue dress that she's chosen to wear to this year's SONA. She captioned it with tips on how to deal with bashers and online negativity.
She lists five ways to deal with haters:
1. Don't be defensive.
"Nasa sa iyo 'yan kung gusto mong dedmahin o patulan ang mga kritisismo’t komento—pero ‘wag mong personalin," she adds. (It's up to you if you want to ignore or engage when somebody comments and criticizes you—but don't take it personally.)
2. "You can choose to learn from criticisms."
3. Have patience.
"Pwede mo naman sagutin sila ng maayos nang 'di kailangan na maging confrontational." (You can opt to answer politely; no need to be confrontational.)
4. "Stop wasting your time with worthless bickering and countering all their false claims."
The senator even quips, "Sayang ang load." (They're not worth your mobile credits.)
5. #BeNice
She advises, "To survive in war and in life, the best defense is NOT offense—it is character. So, preserve love and enjoy life."
Perhaps the best lesson here is how Sen. Nancy Binay consistently deals with her bashers: with unapologetic self-humor. "Nagma-match ako sa carpet," she said. LOL!
