Versatility is a sought-after factor in fashion, and athleisure just may be its poster child. Nowadays, it’s hard to tell if someone is on the way to take a quick jog, to have brunch with their friends, or to accomplish their errands at the mall. Pieces like track pants and hoodies were once confined to the walls of gyms and sports arenas but are now socially acceptable in almost any sartorial situation. The rise of sports-inspired fashion may have been escalated by the 2020 pandemic, where digital yoga sessions and workouts became the norm (and have remained in our lifestyles since), but its origin can be traced back to the 1900s.

The Starting Line of Athleisure
Credited for creating the first tennis skirt was French designer Jean Patou. The couturier’s muse was tennis superstar Suzanne Lenglen, also known as La Divine, who wore his innovation to her game at Wimbledon. It was the 1920s, and women usually had their arms and legs covered even when playing sports. Tagged as radical, it was Jean’s tennis skirt that made room for Suzanne to leap and swing her racket, maximizing her full range of motion.
Historically, her outfit of choice may have contributed to her athletic ability. She won Wimbledon six times and garnered 250 championships in her lifetime, according to the Olympics. This display of a practical and youthful approach to sportswear gained the ability to influence fashion outside the sporty realm.

What Is Athleisure?
The word athleisure was coined decades after Jean’s design. It combines the words “athletic” and “leisure,” blurring the line that separates the two seemingly contradictory terms. It was first used in the March 1979 issue of Nation’s Business which, according to Merriam-Webster, expounded that “the booming popularity of fitness has given birth to a similar boom in apparel and footwear designed for those who actually participate in sports—and those who just want to look as if they do.” They quoted John Gehbauer, then Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's Director of Advertising and Promotion, who first said, “The whole athleisure market is in a state of tremendous growth.”
As defined by the mentioned dictionary, “Athleisure refers to casual clothing—like yoga pants, sweat pants, and hoodies—that are designed to be worn both for exercising and for doing (almost) everything else. Athleisure is everywhere these days.” From cycling shorts and flared leggings to windbreakers and crewnecks, athleisure has made its way to wardrobes that merge activewear with everyday clothing.
Game-Changing Technology
The purpose of athleisure has been clear from the start, but it’s today’s advanced technology that sets it apart from the past. Athleisure is no longer limited to merely emulating the look of exercise clothes, but it actually serves multiple purposes and comes with practical benefits. Michael Brito of Athleisure Wear wrote that the evolution in lightweight fabric technology is what made activewear an everyday staple.
One of the advancements made was that of synthetic fabrics, which “improved on natural fibers like cotton by wicking moisture from the skin.” These synthetic blends were then transformed into versatile fabrics through their integration with premium fibers and innovative weaves that “impart stretch, shape retention, breathability, and quick-drying properties.”

Responsive textiles have also walked into the scene. These smart fabrics adapt to changing conditions, as they “feature embedded technologies, providing targeted functionality like insulation, moisture control, and enhancing muscle recovery,” as said by Michael. It is through these high-performance fabrics and the thoughtful construction behind them that athleisure pieces have attained attributes like durability, mobility, and breathability, all while having you remain in style. These technological advancements are also not limited to clothing, with smart watches and fitness trackers being used on the daily.
Athleisure in Today’s Fashion Arena
High fashion played the game of athleisure in modern times. As early as 2008, Adidas tapped into Stella McCartney’s taste and talent for a collection that featured long jersey shorts and hoodies with multiple drawstrings. They’ve remained frequent collaborators since. Another inseparable pair is Puma and Fenty by Rihanna, whose partnership came into view with an edgy 2016 collection of velvet track pants and platform sneakers among others.
And how could we forget Karl Lagerfeld’s collaboration with Vans in 2017? It was composed of 12 black-and-white pieces, including Karl’s chic Parisian take on the famous checkered skate shoe. Gucci also walked new heights when they extended The North Face’s quarter-circle stamp with their famous red and green stripe in 2020, when they released a colorful collection of quilted jackets, shirts, and backpacks perfect for adventures.

The surge of luxury athleisure was more than enough to go for gold and pique the interest of the young generation. It has become an irreplaceable part of today’s fashion and sports industries, being recognized by sports authorities such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games. A prime example would be Lululemon’s Paris 2024 Athlete Kit for Team Canada, where they sported a comfortable and stylish collection of athleisure wear.

Today, run clubs meet up in trendy spots. Indoor cycling and pilates classes can be taken in malls. Pickleball sessions double as Instagram-worthy photoshoots. Athleisure puts the style in an active lifestyle, serving as the intersection where function and fashion meet.
