Q:I always end up buying a nice pair of shoes that turn out to be unbelievably uncomfortable. Most of the time I end up getting blisters because of them, what should I do?
A: Ever heard of the saying “sacrifice for beauty?” If you’ve been living by this line then we suggest you begin searching for a new mantra because that is your first problem. Look around, there are tons of products out there that offer both style and comfort. As every fashionista knows, there will always be that instance where you’ll come across the shoe that’s too cute to let go even if you know deep inside that it’s anything but comfortable. And because we know you won't be able to resist buying it, here are a few tips you can do to work around that problem.
STEP 1: FIND THE CAUSE
The main causes of blisters are friction, heat, and sweating. More often than not, your most uncomfy pair is the culprit―don’t confine yourself to thinking that it is always caused by your heels because you can also get blisters from your flats or sneakers. Whether there’s something off with the fit, the material used, the seams, or the cushioning, all these factors can cause those unwanted painful pockets of air or fluid that form in your feet.
STEP 2: PREVENTION
Once you’ve figured out the fatal pair, you can easily find the source of the pain.
- Make sure your shoes fit well. If your heels are too big, your feet will keep on sliding forward which will cause friction that could lead to blisters. When it comes to flats or running shoes, the right fit is a thumb’s width between your shoe and the end of your toes, snug but not too tight. You can test it by wiggling your toes.
- Inspect the shoe. Those pieces that have machine sewn edges sometimes leave loose seams that rub against your feet. If you find them, cut them immediately with a pair of scissors or have them removed. The material used is also an important factor. If you know that you have sweaty feet, opt for breathable designs.
- Wear the right kind of socks. Keep in mind that sports and other activities require you to wear thicker socks. Reserve the thin, barely-there ones for your brogues or boat shoes and replace them as soon as they start soaking in sweat.
- Keep your feet dry. If you know you perspire a lot in that area, use foot powder, talcum, or cornstarch.
- Use gel inserts or insoles. You’ll be surprised at how effective these items can be; plus they can make even the most painful pair of heels feel comfy. They are available in all leading department stores and drug stores so they’re really easy to find.
- Take care of your feet. Try putting on petroleum jelly and cover it with socks overnight or simply massage your feet with lotion.
STEP 3: RESCUE
Worst case scenario and you still end up getting a blister, do not try to act like a doctor. Simply clean it with soap and water and let it heal on its own. If it gets worse, consult a dermatologist because pricking it yourself could cause infection.
