Anatomy Of A Store Window

Anatomy Of A Store Window Chocolate Schu Bar gets a makeover.

We're all for the old adage “don't judge a book by its cover”, but you have to admit, an interesting book jacket will catch your eye and will get you reading, even if for just a couple of poorly-written lines. Same principle goes for shopping-a catchy store display will get you veering off your targeted destination and will get you sauntering through those glass store doors. Who can resist the seductive whispers of a beautifully adorned storefront? No one, that's who.

Visual merchandiser Dustin Reyes (who's done window displays for local boutiques like Myth and Aranáz, and has been visual director for 25 stores, including Marc Jacobs, Marni, and Club Monaco) clues us in on just what makes a window display so enticing.

“A good window has to look balanced, whether it be in terms of shapes, quantity, color or lighting”, he shares. When it comes to conceptualizing, he recommends you do your research and urges to dare to dream big. “You need to understand the market of the store you're installing in and have a good idea of what their company stands for as a whole. You need a concept that makes sense with the store but is not necessarily boring. Think outside the box and when you thought you have, take it up three more notches. I hate uninspired and flat windows. For instance, when it's summer I'm not going to put a palm tree and people on a window. That's way too literal”.

For Dustin's most recent project, he lends his creative whiles to the cluster of Schu boutiques dotting the metro. Chocolate Schu Bar at the Power Plant mall is first on his to-do list.
