Every four years, only the best of the best athletes from around the globe assemble for the Olympic Games to compete with their vigorous talent for a chance to score a gold medal. And with the whole world watching, there's no doubt that these accomplished athletes feel the need to grace this global stage in stylish ensembles. Luckily, some of the world’s renowned fashion designers have stepped in to cover that. This was also the perfect opportunity for them to create garments that would well-represent their country and reflect their nation.
Australia in Sportscraft and Toms
The Aussie athletes had green pinstripe blazers and white trousers, styled with scarves and gold ties. They also sported the names of past Aussie gold medal winners in the lining of their jackets and stayed comfortable in shoes designed by Toms.
Cuba in Christian Louboutin
The iconic luxury shoe designer collaborated with the French e-concept store, Sporty Henri, to design the official outfits for the Cuban National Team. The team went for sleek tailoring for their ensembles. For the male athletes, they wore high-top trainers, also known as the “Naza Star” loafer style with red tailored jackets. For the women, they had the “Naza Sandal” block kitten heel sandals with beige tailored jackets. For both jackets, they featured the nation’s flag on the breast pockets, and the five-pointed star was used as an emblem of luck displayed on the back. These jackets are worn with interchangeable trousers, skirts, and shorts.
Canada in DSquared2
Keeping their threads innovative yet chic, the design duo aimed for uniforms that are sporty yet tailored and fashion forward by featuring the “striking simplicity of early Canadian Olympic uniforms.”
France in Lacoste
The French team also kept it preppy but sporty and clean at the same time with an all-white palette and zip-up navy blue jackets. The all-white ensemble featured polos and cropped pants, all of which reflected the Lacoste spirit, founded by tennis legend René Lacoste.
Great Britain in Stella McCartney
The renowned British designer worked with the Olympians such as Tom Daley during the creative process to ensure that her designs were functional yet fashionable. The team had an adidas kit in the colors of the Union flag: red, blue, and white.
Italy in Giorgio Armani
The legendary designer went for a sophisticated yet minimal and slick look by dressing the team in black tracksuits and white contrasting details.
Sweden in H&M
The fast-fashion Swedish retailer we’ve all come to know and love dressed the Swedish team in the country’s colors, but take note: Their gear happens to be highly functional featuring quick-drying and breathable materials, as well as recycled polyester. Fashionable and sustainable, indeed.
USA in Ralph Lauren
Team USA had a preppy and slightly nautical look, but still a classic combination you can’t beat. The team was dressed in navy blazers, white jeans, and casual boat shoes.
