According to BBC News, 40-year old British designer, Alexander McQueen was found dead in his Mayfair home just a little past 10:00 in the morning on February 11. Paramedics were called and pronounced him dead on the scene.

The BBC writes, "A statement released by his office - referring to the designer by his given first name, Lee - read: "On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home.

"At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family. " (Full article here.)

While the family has asked for privacy and has refrained from revealing anymore details, British tabloid, The Sun writes that the designer was found after having committed suicide and that he had suffered from depression after the death of his mother, with whom he appeared to share a very close relationship. The New York Times also reports that "Mr. McQueen's troubled personal life was often the subject of concern among his colleagues and close friends. He was deeply affected when Isabella Blow, the eccentric stylist who discovered and championed the designer, committed suicide in 2007, and he was said to be devastated by the death of his mother on Feb. 2." However, Women's Wear Daily (WWD) maintains that it cannot be determined whether the latter did in fact contribute to his death. Continued coverage from the fashion resource will be released throughout the day as, according to WWD, "A statement from PPR, parent of Gucci Group and the McQueen company, is expected shortly. Circumstances of his death were not revealed and a spokesman declined comment."

A little bit past 1:00 in the morning, Philippine time, The Fashion Spot tweeted, "McQ presentation canceled," while another Twitter correspondent at New York Fashion Week said, "Witnesses say Anna (Wintour) got the McQueen news via text during BCBG; she got up and ran out mid-show. #nyfw " Four hours later, WWD tweeted that "The windows are covered at Alexander McQueen's 14th street shop with white paper."

WWD has published sentiments and memories of fashion insiders like Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Naomi Campbell, and Philip Treacy who are all morning the loss of a beloved peer and friend.

The designer who made fashion rebellion and surrealism a moment to look forward to with each passing season will sorely be missed.
