Women come in different sizes. We find it comforting to know that there are brands that put a conscious effort into catering to varying body types. One clothing line that aims to always create with the real girl in mind is Al Mata. They offer sultry clothing that is flattering on everyone. Also, they use models that show how the item will look on you at a glance, regardless of your size.

In an exclusive interview, Cosmo talked to the owner of Al Mata, Allaine Mata, to find out more about the brand, plus tips for those who also want to start their own business.

When did you start your business and how did you come up with the business name?

Allaine: Al Mata is one of the gains I got from this pandemic. Right after I graduated from my Master’s Degree, I had a lot of time in my hands thinking of the best way to earn a living while doing what I love. So during this quarantine period, I thought of making my hobby into an actual business. I named it Al Mata to incorporate my name into the brand.

How much capital did you invest in this business?

Allaine: For the capital, it did not require much in terms of costs as I only allotted P10,000 for it but I banked on my personal labor capital. I had to really scrutinize the suppliers and the fabrics to manage the overhead expenses.

We noticed you manufacture your own clothes. Do you design them, too?

Allaine: Yes, I manufacture my pieces as I learned sewing from my grandma who is a professional seamstress. In terms of design, I take a look at the trends and get inspiration to create my own take on them.

Your designs cater to different body types, too! What made you decide to take this route?

Allaine: This is because I believe that the designs I make shall be enjoyed by anyone, and size should never be a hindrance. (We totally agree with this, Allaine!)

Are you planning to expand your collection?

Allaine: Yes, we will launch our next collection in August.

How is managing a business different before the pandemic and during the pandemic? Are there specific challenges you want to share?

Allaine: There's no major difference between managing a business before and during the pandemic. It's just that there's a lot of competitors online that are also selling good products. But the good thing is that the number of buyers has increased during the pandemic. They find it more convenient for them to buy online instead of going to the mall. They can easily find everything they want online.

What advice can you give to entrepreneurs who are scared to put up their own business?

Allaine: Take all the risks to start your own business because we all know that starting a business is trial and error. Just use all your resources to be creative, start now, and believe in yourself!
