When Greenbelt 5 is closed on Maundy Thursday and there’s that uncontrollable itch to window shop for expensive things, one turns to the wonderful world of online luxury retailers for some delectable eye candy. A recent browse through at Luisa Via Roma led us to the discovery of a beautiful necklace made of salvaged plastic and Swarovski crystals that looked sweeter than an atrociously decadent Fabergé Easter egg. But it wasn’t just the design or the whopping P171,777 (€3316) price tag that caught our eye, it was the label which bore Filipino accessories designer Ken Samudio’s name.
The comparison between Ken's necklace and Ferragamo's bracelet.
With his keen eye for detail and design flair which often shows off his knack for marine biology, it’s no surprise that Ken once again catches the attention of the overseas press and buyers. (Last year, he made the cut as one of the 12 designers who showcased their collections at the Vogue Talents Corner held in Milan.) But our hats go off to he who has achieved what most local designers could only dream of: being able to compete at an international market. Always one to champion Filipino talent, we beam with pride whenever we learn of a home-grown’s international recognition.
Looking good, Ken! Now to make that purchase.
