A rising breed of creative Filipino minds were initiated into the Philippine fashion industry last May 27, 2010 when the New Generation lineup of Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2010 stalked the catwalks of the SMX Convention Center. Nine young designers of varied backgrounds and artistic sensibilities presented 10-piece collections that contained selection of inspirations.

There was an assemblage that took its cues from the Papal Swiss Guards, although—curiously enough—some of the starting pieces looked like they were ninja- or ronin-inspired instead because of the umbrellas the models carried, sword-like, on their backs.

There was one collection that made liberal and literal use of streetwear as a creative stimulus.

One collection, meanwhile, ended with a black blight that redefined the term ball gown, while another newcomer had a black and white long gown that suspiciously looked like Julia Roberts' 2001 Oscars Valentino gown (we'd like to think it was simply the designer's nod to Mr. Garavani).

But regardless of their hit-or-miss design inspirations, most of these fashion newcomers definitely know how to construct clothes. So it shouldn't be amiss to proclaim that New Generation provided an encouraging peek into the Filipino fashion future. Given enough time to hone their craft and grow into artistic maturity, this emergent crop of designers will undoubtedly provide exciting possibilities for Philippine fashion.
