Most of us are guilty of being a walking fashion disaster at one point in our lives. Let’s be real, no one is born with a sense of style. But as we grow older, we ought to learn how to refine our sartorial choices, which will ultimately lead to defining our personal style.
Sometimes though there are things that we tend to overlook with regards to the way we put ourselves together. Like any good friend, we’re calling out a few mistakes you might have committed maybe once or a couple more times. Read up and find out if you have one or more of these style habits that need breaking.
OVERDOING REPETITIVE PRINTS
We know co-ords are a thing now but that doesn’t exactly mean you having to wear it head-to-toe, down to your shoes and bag. Your accessories should break it off to keep you from looking like you covered your clothes in wallpaper.
DROWNING IN OVERSIZED
There’s a difference between wearing something oversized and trying to fit into a giant’s clothes. If you think that triple XL sweater will make you look like you haven’t eaten, think again because it kind of looks like it’s eating you instead.
BEING BURIED ALIVE IN ACCESSORIES
No matter how plain your outfit may be, there is a limit to the accessories you pile on. It’s very unconventional to be wearing so much bling anyway. Imagine having to take off all those rings when washing your hands each time you go to the comfort room.
WEARING TOO MANY TRENDY PIECES ALL AT ONCE
Remember those old shopping catalogs with the funny photos? Someday your IG feed might end up looking like so with all the “current” pieces you so love to wear. Trends aren’t bad but they do have a tendency to make you look dated, which is why they are best paired with pieces that are classic and timeless.
RIGHT CLOTHES, WRONG TIME
More than following the prescribed dress code, it’s also important to remember the time of day the event is to be held. Come on, last night’s glitter pumps at a 10am brunch with the family? No. Never!
OUT OF PLACE SHOES
Nothing makes us sadder than seeing a girl destroy a good outfit with the wrong pair of shoes. Just because sneakers are in doesn’t mean you ought to pair them with everything.
TRYING TOO HARD
Don’t force an outfit for the sake of looking “stylish.” Trust us; it’s the least stylish thing. Just because you see something styled a certain way in an editorial doesn’t mean you should wear it out in the streets. It’s supposed to create a fantasy and you on the other hand, live in reality.
Not that we’re saying you ought to stick to a rule book when it comes to dressing up. You are free to express yourself with the clothes you put on. But do remember that you are not the only human living in the world and that others may react differently towards you. There’s always a way to look stylish while still being proper.
