Want to dress like every cool girl on IG? Here’s how.

I think we can all agree that what is considered “aesthetic” through the years is ever changing. There was a time when highly saturated OOTDs against picturesque landscapes (remember Nicole Warne and Tara Milk Tea’s early travelgrams?) were considered the Instagram standard, then came the craze of posting analog film-like OOTDs and grainy snaps (even celebs like Kathryn Bernardo and Nadine Lustre were into this), and we dare say there was a moment where an “ugly”, unfiltered and devil-may-care IG grid (we’re looking at you Lily Rose Depp and Jennie of Blackpink!) was also deemed the #aesthetic to covet.

Remember when bright and picture-perfect OOTDs were all the rave?

French actress Lily Rose Depp pioneered this raw unfiltered vibe that was also considered aspirational at some point.

But what isaesthetic” now? With everyone being in quarantine, home photoshoots have become a norm and one’s OOTD formula has definitely been geared towards simple yet stylish pieces that still look good in photos. Having said that, there’s no denying that the au courant Instagram vibe everyone is going for is this distinctly neutral, minimalist style that’s so heavily influenced by Scandinavian fashion and design.

Scandi style has always been about minimalism, in every way possible. If you’ve followed influencers like Darja Barannik and Ivania Carpo for a while now and street style accounts like The Style Stalker and Nordic Style Report, you’ll know that this look has long been part of the region's style DNA. Locally, we’ve seen the shift to this more sexy, and minimal aesthetic through the IG accounts of Ida Anduyan, Angelique Manto (however both have gone the more risqué and streetwear route), Rhea Bue, and Kyla Zuniga of Undo Clothing to name a few.

The beauty of dressing this way is the undeniable classy vibe it exudes. And frankly, who doesn’t want their IG feed to look and feel expensive? So if you’re still wrapping your head around what to buy or edit out of your closet to fully turn your wardrobe into an aesthetic one, here are the six items you need to jumpstart your Scandi style journey.

Bralette or Tank Top

A nicely fitted bralette or tank (in black, white, or beige) is the only top you’ll need to pair with your tailored trousers, or midi skirt. Breezy, easy-to-style, and perfect for our humid weather, it’s the must-have closet essential you should stock up on if you haven’t yet.

Boxy Structured Blazer

Come on, we all know that you’ve liked every single cropped OOTD of someone wearing a blazer over a white top, tucked perfectly in some trousers, and with dainty gold jewelry around their neck. Don’t lie. So why not make yourself the end of that “like spectrum” and invest in a blazer (or three) in muted earth tones. Pro tip: You can never have enough of them in every shade of beige.

Tailored Trousers

Picking the right trouser silhouette could change your overall OOTD drastically. To fully embrace your aesthetic new style, never, ever, buy one that isn’t high-waisted. The key here is to keep it classic. Whether you prefer a slim cigarette or wide-legged fit, make sure that the pair is crisp, preferably in a wrinkle-resistant fabric, and looks good cuffed or not.

Linen dress

Over the years, the linen dress has been considered as the piece de resistance for looking effortlessly stylish without even trying. What we mean is that a linen dress even looks great when you’re in flipflops (but obviously even better if your thong sandal of choice was in black or white).  The key is to find a frock that fits much like a shift dress but falls more like a midi. Opt for pieces that are simple and less attention-grabbing for maximum repeat-ability for the 'gram.

Strappy heeled sandals

Scandi style shows a love for a sexy stiletto, and it's been a long time coming that the tides have turned from the well-loved block heel to something more slim and sleek stiletto here in Manila. The key is to pick a pair that wraps around your foot quite sexily, playing with the notion of straps and ankle ties.

Gold chain jewelry

Finish off your look with a touch of gold. When taking detailed shots of your outfit or posing for selfies, layering gold chains around your neck will instantly elevate your look.

Lastly, remember to always stick to a neutral color palette. If you can pick out items in black, white, and several iterations of beige the better. Happy wardrobe re-styling!
