Since the plain white button-down will probably be in vogue forever, you'll need to keep reinventing it. We’re sure you’ve already worn it with your denim cutoffs, a pencil skirt, your favorite jeans, office trousers, and even layered it with a sweater and various jackets; but today we’ll show you that there are even more ways of wearing the ever reliable closet staple.
Bored of your plain old shirt? Grab a black ribbon and tie it into a bow around the collar and voila! No one will even notice it’s the same shirt you wore last week. Add fun to the mix by pairing it with prints via an embroidered skirt.
If you still haven’t noticed, these days, the more chill and laid back your ensemble is, the cooler you’ll look. Get that I-woke-up-like-this effect by grabbing a loose button-down, a simple skort, and your comfy flats for a retail therapy run to the mall.
Layering the white button-down with a dress (or pretty much anything) will always give off that preppy feel. For a change, pick a plunging mini dress in a noisy print that won’t make you look like the school librarian (not that that can't be chic, too).
Take inspiration from the ‘70s for your next office look. Combine tailored pieces but don’t forget the little details. Open maybe three to four buttons, pick a pair of trousers with an extra detail like a white line running down the side, and dress it up with pointy pumps.
Take the basic button-down and jeans combo up a notch by adding the crop top to the mix. It may be so over when worn on its own, but layered over a crisp white shirt, it actually looks pretty cool.
