Borrowed from the boys
Remember when pairing a flouncy skirt with a tailored blazer was all the rage? These days, you’ll find blazers in all sorts of permutations—for casual wear, for formal wear, and everything in between. The fit is more feminine than its 2009 counterpart but it still gives an otherwise romantic outfit just the right amount of structure.
Retro plastic glasses
Not counting classic frames such as clubmasters and wayfarers, acrylic sunnies are still in vogue today. Though the shapes vary, hold on to your frames because they will probably still be in style a decade from now—as long as they don’t break!
The classic ‘60s silhouette gets an update in colors and patterns but is still very much a style staple 10 years later. You can throw it on and pair with flats or heels and instantly change up the vibe. Layered over a long-sleeved shirt or turtleneck, it gives the retro look a preppy upgrade.
Sparkly, bejeweled danglers were on every red carpet in 2009. These days, these earrings that are sometimes long enough to graze the shoulder and they come in subtle and sleeker designs. Although for those who aim to make a statement, bright and bold ones are still in the market.
The workwear staple that can be worn as a button-down top or even a cover-up have gone through many reincarnations in the past decade. But this remains to be true, one can never have enough chambray tops. You can dress it up or down depending on how you accessorize it.
From accessories to dresses, 2009 was all about the sparkling, shimmering, and splendid. From long column gowns to the subtler minis, there was enough glitter to go around. These days, you won’t be surprised to see these crossing the runways and hanging from retail stores everywhere.
Whether you want to go for nautical or Parisian vibes, your go-to is definitely the striped tee. The marinière or Breton shirt usually has a boat neck with sleeves that go until the middle of your arm. But these days, they come in crew neck, short sleeves, and even in dress form. So many to choose from!
The white shirt
You can never have too many crisp white button-downs in your closet. And judging from how this trend has remained a staple throughout the years, you should totally invest in high-quality brands that will last you longer.
